The Greek Society of Bookbinding, Zosimaia Public Central Library of Ioannina and the Foundation Konstantinos Katsaris, on the occasion of the 90th anniversary celebration from the city’s liberation, co-organized an Exhibition under the title:
“THE ART OF BOOKBINDING FROM BYZANTINE TIMES TO THE PRESENT. THE TREASURES OF IOANNINA.”
It is the first time that the history of book art and in particular of the greek book binding was connected to the artifacts of Ioannina and was presented in an exhibition with rich audiovisual material which showcased its evolution from the 2nd century A.D. to this day. Reproductions of luxury book binding from the biggest museums and the most important European libraries portray the evolution of this unique art that not only captures the artistic movements of each era but also reflects the economic, political and social conditions of the Greek territory throughout its long history. The treasures of Zosimaia Library, the Holy Metropolis of Ioannina, the University of Ioannina-Department of Modern History, the Ioannina Island Lake Monastery of Eleousis, and also of private city collections will be exhibited accompanied by explanatory captions enlightening the visitor, as well as other unrecognized artworks of the city of Ioannina. The exhibition includes an educational section with a bookbinding bench, tools and 18th and 19th century bookbinding jewels from Alexandria, Egypt, as well as audiovisual material related to the art of bookbinding.
