Michail Th.Chrisohoos Zitsaiou Map Exhibition (2018)

In the context of the 105th Anniversary from the celebration of the Liberation of Ioannina, Zosimaia Public Central Historical Library of Ioannina organized a Map Exhibition from Michail Th.Chrisohoos Zitsaiou (1834-1921).

In the exhibition, materials from Michail Zitsaios were presented, with the central exhibit being the map collection “[Pinaks tis Mesimvrinis Ipeirou kai tis Thessalias] / Drawn by Michail Th. Chrisohoos, Zitsaiou. In Athens: by lithographer G.Coleman, 1881”.

The maps derive from the Special Map Collections of Zosimaia Library, which span from the 17th century to the present. Political, geophysical, military classified (at the time of their publication) maps, ethnographical Balkan maps with school, and population registries, and statistical tables, maps of Metropoles and Episcopal Greek Patriarchies, maps of archaeological interest and touristic maps, they all cover and represent a wide range of interests.

Michail Th. Chrisohoos holds a prominent position among the 19th century Greek Cartographers. The sum of eight pages of the first volume was designed by Michail Chrisohoos upon the order of the Lieutenant Colonel Kostantinos Isomahos (1832-1888) and the Association of Defense and Brotherhood “based on the already existing ones by Kipert and the Austrian, after additions and corrections were made, published in March 1881” / “[epi ti vasi ton iparxonton Kipert kai tou Afstriakou, meta prosthikon kai diorthoseon tou, ekdotheis kata Martion tou 1881]”.  Chrisohoos’s maps were used in the Convention of Constantinople for the resolution of the border issue between Greece and the Ottoman Empire.

The exhibition was transferred and presented to the audience of the birthplace of Michail Chrisohoos, in Zitsa.
